Rum has been my go to liquor for many years. Probably just the sailor in me. The Appleton rums they have at the resort are fine for mixed drinks, and on occasion the VX is good enough for a sipping rum. If you have not tried the 12 year old Appleton estate or better yet the 18 year old variety you need to do so. I usually get some of the 12 year old stuff at the duty free on the way home. The 18 year old variety is harder to find but worth it if you can get it. I have not tried the 21 year old Appleton Estate but I want to. I just hate the idea of rushing to repack a 65.00 bottle of rum in checked baggage between customs and the next flight. I have had a bottle of rum broken before and thankfully it was a simple Appleton Special rum we didn't give a lot for. I believe my anger level for them wasting a bottle of 21 year old rum would get me arrested at the airport. I mean that would be just disrespectful.

For me not being an everyday drinker I usually do Bacardi/coke as my mixed drink when in our home area, and when it's party time I switch up to 151 and coke. I'm not into it enough to search out better quality I guess.
When in Jamaica I switched over to strawberry daquiri thinking the rum would be bacardi but nope, most times it's appleton.
Now what I learned was that if you didn't say anything different they'd usually use the appleton spiced rum which I was against at first, now I can't wait to get back and have an appleton spiced daquiri. It has nothing to do with being good rum, it's just a flavor I directly associate with Jamaica.
My faves for sipping:
Appleton 12
El Dorado 15 (Guyana)
Barbancourt 15 (Haiti)
Bacardi 8
Foursquare spiced rum (Barbados)
Doorly's XO (Barbados)
and Don Lorenzo (Bahamas) for making Bahama Mamas
Kitty is not really a rum drinker save the occasional 151 Strawberry Daiquiri- but for me:
1. Captain Morgan Private Reserve- yummy by itself and mixed
2. Flor De Cana- exquisite, in a few different ages.
3. Captain Morgan 100- excellent vanilla accent- when ya really gotta get drunk!

Like the rum cream in my coffee (since they don't have Baileys or Caroline's).
I'm partial to Havana Club 7 year for rum and cokes. Sipping rum has to be Pyrat cask 23, though at almost $200 a bottle that's small sips. LOL! The Pyrat pistol is also nice tasting rum.
Appleton Estate, straight, it's like candy, pure sugar cane

Cockspur, a very nice sipping rum neat or on the rocks. Not too pricey.
As far as mixed goes, doesn't really matter, but my standard 7 a.m. tailgating drink is now Captain Morgan, Kahlua and black coffee.
Among the high priced versions, I love Zaya - think it's from Guatemala. For more price conscious drinking, I like Sailor Jerry as it is about the sam price as Capt Morgan and has a similar flavor but with a little less mediciney taste. Somewhere in the middle I like Mt Gay (though I wish they would change the name - hard to shout that one across a crowded bar for a refill).
