Earthquake in Haiti, 7.3 A tsunami warning has been issued for neighbouring nations, including Jamaica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. 5.3 in Jamaica...Holy Crap! Was supposed to leave Boston at 6am, but may not....damn tsunami's can kill. Pray for everyone.
A tsunami watch instituted for sections of the Caribbean has been cancelled.
According to the United States based NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center the warning was cancelled because based on the earthquake epicenter, it was believed that "destructive tsunami waves (were) near the earthquake epicenter but there is not a threat to coastal areas further away. Therefore the tsunami watch issued by this center is now cancelled."
A release from the Center further reported that "for any affected areas, when no major waves have occurred for at least two hours after the estimated arrival time or damaging waves have not occurred for at least two hours then local authorities can assume the threat is passed. Danger to boats and coastal structures can continue for several hours due to rapid currents."
The Center, however still warns that the all clear decision must be made by local authorities.
A tsunami watch was in place for Bahamas, Cuba and the Dominican Republic following the 7.0 earthquake in Haiti at minutes to 5 p.m. today.
Since the earthquake there have been at least five aftershocks in Haiti ranging from 5.9 to 4.5 on richter scale. Tremors associated with the earthquake were felt in Jamaica in sections of Portland, St. Mary, Kingston, St. Andrew.
Dr. Lindon Brown from the Earthquake Unit said in a report on TVJ that the tremor appeared to have been stronger in Hope Bay, Portland as residents reported chairs were moving and glass was breaking during the tremor.
Tunamis tend to happen when the water is shallow. Some of the trenches around Jamaica are the deepest in the world. I suspect that takes a great deal of steam out of the surge.
