Anyone ever bought a local phone? Also internet question...

We are seriously thinking about not waiting for our annual week in January and running away for a quickie (additional) short trip within the next 2 weeks (how bad are we - lol).

If we do this, we will not be officially "on vacation" for this trip and dh will really need to check in quite a bit with work. Our carrier (verizon) charges $1.99 per minute in Jamaica...gets pricey in a hurry.

Has anyone ever bought a local phone and can share experiences? I don't want to waste my limited time in Jamaica looking around off-site, so I would be limited just to the airport. If dh could use a cheaper phone for the business calls it would be great!

Also, we have not used the internet access before.....can anyone tell me if there is wireless available to buy at H2 and how reliable it us?

I have bought local phone there before, awhile back... get a basic phone and pay as you go. I know one of the carriers have a great deal where you pay $1000 Ja dollars and you get unlimited U.S calls per mth. Approx US$15 !!
There was a "digicel" phone booth when you exit Customs and go out. Not sure if there location has changed ..I am spaeking abot Montego Bay airport.

If you hve an Unlocked phone just take it there and buy a SimCard which should work out cheaper than buying a phone.

We used the "Cafe" last time at Hedo 2, not sure if they have wireless, I thought I read somewhere that they did and since they have wireless at Hedo 3 now, I am sure Hedo 2 does as well. The service at Hedo 3 was limited to the hotel lobby and did go out from time to time.
