I never see them except when I forgot in a haze to put them on. This year I think I'll tie them with my smoking material cause I never forget that!

Just wondering do water shoes really prevent a sea urchin spine from going through? Seems like they are pretty thin.... Not doubting you, just curious. Been to the Lido and Sandals and never saw anyone have a problem with them. 134 sleeps to go...

I never used water shoes, 10 days swimming on CO side. But I always dove in early, never touched the bottom. The beach drops off fairly quick and you can be careful if you have been in the ocean much. Otherwise, beach shoes good option. Every week a few people step on one and it doesn't seem fun.

We hate waters shoes too, we'd much rather be bare foot....especially on the beach and in the ocean. I was just wondering how far out and how deep the water is, where the grass starts?

We just came back from Hedo II. My hubby stepped on a young one in the white sand...not even in the grassy part.
As long as you get it all pulled out and put either toothpaste(drying agent) or gin on it from the bar you should be OK.
Someone else stepped on one and couldn't get it out. $350.00 cost at the resorts med center. OUCH !
Water shoes or get on raft right off the beach.

I've been diving for a long time in an area with really tough sea urchins, thick short spines which can never be totally removed. I've mostly gotten them in the knees from work dives when I'm on the bottom pulling a mooring or something, so I'm usually okay to walk.

Here is what I was always told to do and always found it worked. If you've ever put a clam shell in a bowl of vinegar you'll understand :http://www.wikihow.com/Treat-a-Sea-Urchin-Sting

    Cheers

Last year I stepped on one and it hurt at the time. Never could get them all out that day but it more bugged me walking around than hurt. I finally pulled them out a few weeks later. One was a good 1/4 inch long. My question is...an I just strange or just have strong feet?

watch out, but enjoy the water

I had three small spines on the side of my foot one trip with water shoes. This last trip no water shoes and in the water once be LOOKING for them till I was on a raft above the bottom. I have a set of heavy duty dive boots that I forgot that have spines in them what would have been in my feet otherwise. So, be careful, if the water is full of sand from wave action, you may not want to go in right then till you can see the bottom. Better to float on top of the water if you can.
This is not an issue just at Hedo but all along the beach.

And I was going to pass on opening your picture because I thought it was a sea urchin pic.
    I am glad I didn't pass.
